My great-grandfather was a tram driver in Sunderland, in the northeast of England. The actual tram he drove was the number 16 shown here, which is now a working exhibit at the Beamish open-air museum near Newcastle.

dreaming of steam

The most breathtaking aspect of the Altiplano in Bolivia is the extraordinary sense of emptiness. Old industrial artifacts like this train near Salar Uyuni seem to gaze out over the desert like sentinels of the past.
